About The Game

Three Kingdoms Yi is a two dimensional turn based roguelite deckbuilder made by the solo developer XL Studio. The campaign follows a sovereign who tries to support the crumbling Han dynasty while warlords divide the land. The map covers eight provinces and forty nine cities, from the starting region of Yizhou all the way to the gates of Luoyang. The main goal is to gather a battle line of generals, take city after city and keep the banner of the faction alive through a long and unpredictable campaign. The project was created in about two months, and that tight production shows in a focused design that trims everything except the core loop. The art style uses small sprites and painted portraits, while the interface leans on classic Chinese calligraphy and banner motifs, which gives the battles a distinct look without a huge budget.The gameplay mixes deckbuilding with general cultivation. Four slots on the battlefield are open for commanders, and troops can be deployed or withdrawn at any moment. Each general brings distinct talents, and thousands of combinations become possible as the roster grows. When a commander retires, their talents can be passed to a successor, so the bloodline and the deck keep evolving between runs. Every province offers a choice of events, shops, recruitment and rest stops, and the route shapes the fate of the campaign. Enemy generals can be persuaded with decrees of different quality, and a lucky attempt may turn a rival into an ally under the player banner. The awakening system lets the sovereign follow one of four paths, and each path changes the available cards and abilities. Among the most interesting features are the banner collection that grants blessings to the whole army, the Star Chart that unlocks new talents as recruitment grows, and the constant tension between a safe march and a risky push toward the capital.
