SGS Operation Downfall — we all know that the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in August 1945 precipitated Japans surrender at the end of World War II. But what if the Manhattan Project had failed or experienced such delays that the bombs could not be ready in time. Operation Drop was the code name for the Allied plan to invade the Japanese home islands. The operation consisted of two parts, Operation Olympic and Operation Coronet. Operation Olympic, scheduled to begin in November 1945, aimed to capture the southern third of Japan’s southernmost main island of Kyushu, using the recently captured island of Okinawa as a springboard.SGS.Operation.Downfall-DARKSiDERS

In early 1946, Operation Coronet was launched, a planned invasion of the Kanto Plain, near Tokyo, on the main Japanese island of Honshu. Air bases on Kyushu captured in Operation Olympic, and possibly other captures on nearby Shikoku, would provide ground support for Operation Coronet from the air. If the «Drop» had happened, it would have been the largest amphibious operation in history.

Japan’s geography made this invasion plan quite obvious and the Japanese were able to accurately predict the Allied invasion plans and thus adjust their defensive plan, Operation Ketsugo, accordingly. The Japanese planned an all-out defense of Kyushu, leaving little reserve for any subsequent defensive operations. Accident forecasts varied widely, but were extremely high. Depending on the degree to which Japanese civilians resisted the invasion, Allied casualties were estimated to be in the millions. In this game you will experience two amphibious assaults and a total amphibious assault against the Japanese home islands in 1945 and 1946.
