A century has passed since the New Dawn Protocol, and New Aartis has grown comfortable under the United Systems Initiative. Then somebody finds an energy source, and the dead start moving with more force than anyone remembers. Mercenaries keep the peace across the sector until the discovery changes the math. Ninja Kiwi frames Zombie Assault Resurgence as a top down shooter with a full role playing spine, and the mercenary crew at the centre of it works either alone or with three friends. The setup gives the waves a reason to keep coming, which is more than most shooters of this shape bother with. Three classes set the frame: Assault, Heavy and Medic, each with six core skills and six class skills plus three activated abilities that can flip a bad wave. Two speciality branches lock traits in and open further skills, so a build commits at some point instead of staying general. Strongboxes feed an arsenal of over sixty primary and secondary weapons, and the loadout also takes armour, grenades and turrets. Waves bring the older enemies back alongside new types, and bosses close out the harder stretches. A crafting system improves gear between runs, which takes the edge off a bad drop. Merc skills are the part that decides whether a team survives a rush, so the trees deserve a look before the first mission. The version on the store page and its patch notes show what each update changed, and the four player scale holds across the whole campaign. A team can split the three roles, and a run with four players covers more ground than a solo one, which is where the cooperative side pays off.
