The first reviews for Trails in the Sky 2nd Chapter a remake of the classic JRPG by Nihon Falcom have begun to appear online. Judging by these initial assessments, the developers succeeded in preserving the original’s greatest strengths its sweeping story and compelling characters while significantly updating the visuals, voice acting, and certain gameplay elements.

At the time of writing, the first thirteen scores on OpenCritic give the game an average of around 94 out of 100. Among the highest scores is a 9.5/10 from Game Informer. After spending roughly 80 hours with the game, the publication hailed the remake as one of the best RPGs of the year, specifically highlighting Estelle Brights coming of age story and the organic way the developers expanded upon the original title.

That is how Game Informer describes the overall impression of Trails in the Sky 2nd Chapter. The reviewer specifically praised the visual upgrades, voice acting, and the revamped quest tracking system. The only notable downside cited was the presence of some overly long dungeons, reminiscent of RPG design from nearly two decades ago.

The reviewer admitted to becoming so captivated by the remake that they immediately purchased Trails in the Sky the 3rd, as Nihon Falcom had completely won them over with these two consecutive remakes. The writing and character work received special praise: NPCs continue to offer new dialogue following major events, and the narrative gradually expands on plot threads established in the first game.

At the same time, the developers did not radically alter the core gameplay. The combat and character progression systems largely retain the structure of the first game, with changes feeling more like a natural evolution of a familiar formula.

Not all impressions were entirely glowing, however. Analog Stick Gaming highlighted another drawback: a significant portion of the adventure takes place in familiar locations. The author calculated that roughly 30 to 40 hours of the nearly 60-hour campaign involve revisiting areas from the first game. In his view, this makes Liberl feel visually smaller than one would expect from a full fledged sequel.
