About The Game

Chainstaff, an explosive mixture of a two dimensional shooter and a platformer, plunges the player into a nightmarish dream where the planet is tormented by stellar spores. The main character is forced to coexist with an alien parasite that grants power to fight distorted life forms. The visual design references vinyl record covers of the seventies, filling the screen with neon mohawks of mutant pigs and giant dragon butterflies. The image strikes with its originality, although it sometimes suffers from stylistic inconsistency. The musical accompaniment by Deon van Herden sets the pace while the protagonist makes his way through surreal landscapes reminiscent of old retro classics.

The most important aspect of the gameplay is the system of ethical choice when interacting with surviving marines. The player is free either to save people or to spend their resources to obtain destructive upgrades, which inevitably leads to different story endings. Although the Chainstaff levels are overly linear, and secret zones do not always fit logically into the landscape, constant clashes with oversized bosses prevent boredom. Effectiveness in these battles is ensured through:

• Using the telescopic staff as a grappling device.
• Creating an energy barrier for protection against enemy projectiles.
• Ranged attacks using a transforming spear.
• Exploiting square owl heads to cross chasms.
• Brutal disposal of giant crustaceans and flying reptiles.
