Cats Away is a nautical real time strategy adventure from Studio Saizensen and the publisher Nicalis, Inc., with an anime look and a crew of talking cats. Three seafaring sisters, Kanna, Lilia and Alicia, reunite at the port where the ship of their father is docked, together with their faithful cat crewmates. When the father does not show up and the ship is suddenly attacked, the sisters embark on a perilous maritime journey that involves pirate guilds, a mysterious cat hating syndicate, ancient magic spells and giant mutated monsters. The campaign mixes laughs and danger in equal measure, runs for more than thirty hours and hides a big family secret that only the end of the voyage will reveal. The look mixes cartoon warmth with real naval tactics, and the talking crew turns every battle into a small comedy.

The gameplay puts the player in command of a sailing ship and its fluffy crew. During battles the ship is steered manually, maneuvering into advantageous positions while orders are given on the fly to counter enemy tactics. Between fights the sisters dock at faraway ports to upgrade weapons and equipment, meet new friends and enemies, learn skills and take side missions for treasure. Crewmates are recruited from sixty different cat breeds to man weapons, pilot remote units, repair the ship and administer first aid, and each of the three sisters unlocks her own set of commands at the helm. Among the most interesting features are the dramatic single player story, the talking cat crew with real jobs on deck, the colorful ship combat and the open routes to uncharted waters. Side missions are entirely optional, treasure funds the upgrades, and new routes to uncharted waters open as the crew grows stronger and the sisters learn to trust each other at the helm. The balance between story and command keeps both halves alive, and the sea itself stays a constant opponent.
