Rumors Spark Excitement for PC Gamers

Recent whispers in the gaming community suggest that Microsoft might be planning a game-changing move: introducing Xbox backward compatibility to PC. This speculation stems from a cryptic comment by Parris Lilly, co-host of the popular Kinda Funny XCast podcast, during a discussion on ResetEra. Lilly’s teasing remark, paired with a knowing smile, has ignited hope among fans that PC gamers could soon access Xbox’s classic titles, potentially transforming the gaming landscape.

What Games Could Be Included?

While details remain scarce, the potential scope of this backward compatibility feature is thrilling. Will it support games from the original Xbox, Xbox 360, or Xbox One? If the rumors hold true, PC gamers might enjoy a setup similar to the Xbox Series, where select classic titles are playable with enhanced performance. The most tantalizing possibility? Grand Theft Auto VI (GTA 6), set for a console release on May 26, 2026, could potentially become playable on PC sooner than expected, despite no official PC release date yet.

Microsoft’s Unified Gaming Ecosystem

Microsoft’s recent efforts to unify its gaming platforms lend credibility to these rumors. The company is reportedly testing a new Xbox PC App feature for Windows 11 and handheld devices like the ROG Ally. This feature would allow players to access games from multiple libraries Xbox Game Pass, Steam, Epic Games, and more through a single, streamlined interface. This move signals Microsoft’s commitment to creating a seamless gaming ecosystem that transcends platform boundaries.

Xbox’s Vision for the Future

Sarah Bond, President of Xbox, has emphasized the company’s focus on a player-centric future. In a recent statement, she highlighted Microsoft’s collaboration with AMD to develop versatile chips and platforms that work across various devices. Bond’s vision is clear: an ecosystem that follows gamers wherever they are whether at home, on the go, or switching between devices. Backward compatibility is a cornerstone of this strategy, ensuring players can carry their game libraries across generations and platforms.

Why This Matters for PC Gamers

If Microsoft successfully brings Xbox backward compatibility to PC, it could redefine PC gaming. Players would gain access to a treasure trove of Xbox classics, potentially including high-profile titles like GTA 6. This move would not only bridge the gap between console and PC gaming but also position the PC as a central hub for Xbox’s gaming legacy.

What’s Next?

While the gaming community eagerly awaits official confirmation, Microsoft’s track record of innovation suggests that this feature could be a reality soon. With testing already underway for the Xbox PC App and partnerships like the one with AMD in full swing, the future looks bright for PC gamers. Could May 2026 mark the moment when PC players dive into GTA 6 alongside console gamers? Only time will tell, but the prospect is undeniably exciting.

Stay tuned for updates as Microsoft continues to shape the future of gaming with its bold vision for cross-platform compatibility.

With old games maybe. But with new games, in particular with GTA 6, it won't work. Rockstar simply won't do it, since such a move will simply break their financial flow, which has been fine-tuned over the years - first on the current generation of consoles, then on PC, then on the new generation of consoles.

I think it's nothing more than a rumor. But, anything can happen, so let's not worry before the appointed time.
