Steel Division 2 Black Sunday — As the Reich is pulling back its forces across the Eastern Front to reinforce its forces preparing for battle near the Vistula River, one of the Axis' last and short-term local victories at the gates of Warsaw, the Soviets are already planning their next move. The new strategic offensive was to provide an advantage on the weakened southern Romanian front, from where the once powerful armored reserves were sent to the north for battles. Here, near the borders of one of Hitler’s remaining allies, the Soviets planned to resume the Stalingrad campaign. Attacking Romanian forces on both flanks of the German 6th Army, the Soviets planned to trap the regrouped Wehrmacht formation between the 2nd and 3rd Ukrainian fronts.To accomplish this task, the Red Army must break through the main Romanian divisions near the defensive lines at Yassy in the Tiraspol sectors. This strategic offensive also pursued Stalin’s global goal to withdraw Romania from the war. This Western European country has been an Axis ally since 1941, and with steadily declining popular support over the years of fighting on the Eastern Front, it was on the verge of joining the Allied ranks. August 20, 1944 — The summer was hot and long. Black Sunday, the worst day in terms of Wehrmacht losses, is about to come.
