About The Game

The Merlies is a cozy building adventure from the studios Darjeeling, Blue Ramen and ARTE France, set in a cute post apocalyptic world filled with the remains of a long forgotten civilization. A huge storm has scattered a community of tiny birds across the land, and the player slowly gathers the flock back together. Exploration works in a metroidvania style: as the squad grows and learns new skills, new hidden passages open across a colorful 2D universe, and the order of discovery depends on who is currently in the team. No creature or fight blocks the way, but nature itself acts as the opponent, because every thorn, rock and tree becomes a real obstacle for such fragile little fellows. Losing a single bird on the road is a genuine risk that keeps every trip tense and careful.

The gameplay rests on the specific abilities of each Merlie. The birds climb electric cables and fallen billboards, launch into the sky from mushrooms and squeeze through empty pipes, while everyday objects take on gigantic proportions and new purposes: a lamp becomes a cozy house, a slate turns into a huge map and an ice cube tray becomes a store room. Collected scraps are carried home to create and decorate a village, accommodate new residents and train them for longer expeditions. Visually inspired by graphic novels and children picture books, the game tells a bright poetic tale about small heroes in a big world. Among the most charming features are the expressive bird characters, the layered level design full of secret passages and the gentle loop of scavenging, building and unlocking the next region. The tone stays warm and funny even when the world around the birds is broken, and the game never rushes: a trip can be paused to admire the view or to lead a straggler back to the group. Nothing here punishes the player for exploring at a slow pace.
