The Magus Circle is an action roguelite from By Witchlight built on a premise few games would dare attempt: you cast spells by drawing their sigils with your own hand, and the game accepts even crude sketches as genuine magic. The philosophy is stated plainly by the developers, magic is art, and protecting the circle means saving the cosmos. Hand drawn sigils sit at the center of a vampire survivors style loop, where the screen fills with monsters and your only defense is a steady hand and a growing arsenal. Six mages form the circle you fight for, each with a personal skill tree, distinct abilities and, in keeping with the tone of the game, plenty of emotional baggage. The threat spans four planets, where hordes of enemies and colossal bosses stand between the mages and survival, and twenty spells backed by six hundred upgrades give you the tools to hold the line. The studio clearly trusts players to learn by doing, since almost everything about the circle, from its rivalries to its rituals, is discovered through play rather than explanation.

The gameplay combines wave clearing action with a drawing mechanic that keeps every cast physical: a sigil traced on a drawing tablet, a touch screen or through controller assistance becomes the spell that fires, and sloppy drawings still work as long as the shape reads true. Between missions, life at the manor opens up, where you can unlock familiars, wager winnings, concoct potions and grow a garden, and exploring its rooms slowly uncovers the secrets of the Circle itself. Boss fights punctuate each planet with colossal set pieces that test both your drawing speed and your loadout planning. Accessibility options let players slow or freeze time entirely, or switch to a button press mode for casting, so the hand drawn magic never becomes a barrier to anyone. Each of the six mages plays differently thanks to their skill trees, and the large upgrade pool reshapes runs with fresh synergies every time you set out. Among the most interesting features is the wagering and manor layer, which turns downtime between battles into a strange, cozy second game of its own.
