About The Game

CODEX MORTIS is an isometric horde survival bullet hell roguelite developed by GROLAF and published by CRUNCHFEST, and it casts you as a necromancer carving through waves of the restless dead. The twist is that your power is a deck: before each mission you assemble spells into a loadout, and during the run you spend points on booster packs that expand it, with mutations riding along on individual spells to warp their behavior in unpredictable ways. Ten schools of magic form the foundation of the system, covering Necromancy, Summoning, Blood Magic, Soul Magic, Curses, Harvest, Death Knight, Spiritism, Desolation and Apothecary, and around two hundred spells can be drawn from them. Every school combines with the others, and thirty one heroes embody those combinations, from Ravena Bloodscythe, who mixes Blood Magic with Harvest, to Seraphon Wraithblade, a fusion of Harvest, Death Knight and Soul Magic. Choosing a hero is really choosing a theory about which schools belong together, and the game is generous enough to let almost any theory work.

The gameplay unfolds across fourteen levels of procedurally generated worlds, beginning at the Forgotten Graveyard and ending on The Road to Blood Bath, with the last six stages forming the second chapter of Apocrypha and the final four also available in a dedicated Survivor mode. The climax is a three phase boss carrying six hundred thousand health points, and artifacts plus permanent progression upgrades to damage, cooldowns, health and speed let every run push a little further than the last. Sessions can be played solo, in local co op or online with up to four players using password protected lobbies, and a player who crashes can rejoin mid run without dragging the party down. Hordes scale to punish lazy positioning, and the deck you built before the mission decides whether your spell combinations sing or fall apart under pressure. Among the most interesting features is that deck building layer wrapped around horde combat, which turns every attempt into both an action gauntlet and a live experiment in spell synergy.
