About The Game

Following Seas is a captain simulator of a sailing ship, set among the ruins of a fallen empire where scattered peoples inhabit the few surviving islands. The player is given the role of a connecting link for these isolated communities. By steering the ship, one must become a vital artery for them, delivering cargo on which the very survival of entire settlements depends. The project stakes its claim not on fast-paced adventures but on a slow and thoughtful gameplay where every voyage carries enormous significance. The atmosphere is created by the feeling of solitude in a vast and often hostile sea, where the horizon becomes the only constant companion.

Ship control is carried out from a first-person view, allowing detailed study of vessels modeled after historical prototypes of the 15th to 18th centuries. Instead of direct control over the sails, Following Seas implements a complex physical simulation. To adjust the rigging, the length and position of the guide cables must be manually tuned to catch the wind. No less attention is paid to stability: the correct placement of cargo and the use of ballast are the keys to ensuring the ship does not capsize during a storm. New ships can be obtained by finding wreckage and delivering blueprints and materials to the shipyard.

The sea element here is a full-fledged opponent capable of posing a serious challenge. Sudden storms and shifting winds create a constant threat to the seafarer. A system of gradual flooding is implemented, where water on the deck negatively affects the stability of the ship, up to its complete capsizing. To stay afloat in difficult conditions, water must be pumped out with pumps in a timely manner. Navigation on the open sea requires the use of authentic instruments such as a compass, chronometer, and quadrant to determine one's position and plot the correct course to the destination.

Challenges of the sea element — a test for the captain:

• Careful distribution of cargo and ballast to maintain the balance of the ship.
• Manual adjustment of sails through cable control to maximize the use of wind force.
• Orientation on the open sea with the help of navigational instruments of the age of sail.
• Fighting the consequences of storms, including pumping out water to prevent flooding.
