About The Game

Black Book — role-playing game with elements of adventure and card games. The game is based on Russian folk tales. The independent studio Morteshka is responsible for its creation. The game takes place in an alternative, fantastic version of 19th century Russia in the city of Perm, north of Chedryni the design of the area is based on maps of that historical period originating from the Perm Historical Museum. The source of inspiration for the historical layer and atmosphere was Slavic folklore, or rather the so-called stories of alleged encounters with ghosts. The consultant was Konstantin Shumov, an ethnographer and expert in this field.

The main character of the game is Vasilisa, a young girl who was destined to become a witch, but she chose to follow her heart and be with a man. Unfortunately, his fiance once dies under very mysterious circumstances. A woman decides to find the Black Book a powerful demonic artifact that, according to legend, can fulfill any desire provided that its owner finds seven seals.

The Black Book is a hybrid of three genres adventure, role-playing game and card battles mainly we are talking about creating our own deck. The action is most often observed from behind the heroine, although the perspective of the camera sometimes changes. The game includes a study of the location, completing side quests they are based on various types of folk tales you will find a summary in the encyclopedia inside the game, solving puzzles and gradually revealing the main plot.

From time to time we are forced to fight, because the system responsible for the battles is implemented in a step-by-step model this mechanics resembles the solutions known from the classic jRPG games. The player uses spells and summon monsters, while the choice of available magic abilities depends on which cards were found during his travels. It is worth noting that the game uses interesting mechanics demons caused by the main character are a powerful asset in battle, but at the same time they can turn against it if they have nothing more to do. Careful decisions need to be made before we call the monsters, we need to know that we really need him on the battlefield.

The Black Book presents a rather interesting, three-dimensional graphic design. In terms of style, the game resembles an animated film here we are dealing with a certain simplification in terms of the appearance of the character or location the creators did not strive for realism, but thanks to this style, the game certainly can not but rejoice with its atmosphere. The atmosphere is also built thanks to the skillful use of colors they are pretty cool, not very bright and harmonize well with the dark atmosphere.
