SGS Fall Weiss (White Plan in German, the codename for the operation) encapsulates the Polish campaign from September to October 1939. World War II’s commencement was officially marked by Germany’s invasion of Poland on September 1, 1939. This «official» start date is noteworthy because Hitler initially aimed to initiate the operation on August 26. Due to diplomatic considerations, the launch was postponed. However, not all of the specialized units responsible for actions behind Polish lines received the counter-order in time, leading to various skirmishes. German forces displayed swiftness, brutality, and an appearance of invincibility, often attributed to the concept known as «blitzkrieg.» Interestingly, the term «blitzkrieg» was coined by Western journalists and was not strictly a formal military doctrine. The Germans themselves did not employ the term. Instead, it was an astute application of technological advancements in motorization and radio communication, coupled with the strategic use of tanks, drawing from ideas developed by several military thinkers over the preceding two decades.
